Android am Tisch – Android at the table

Ich besitze ein Tablet. Als ich anfing, mich auf die Mass Effect Runde vorzubereiten, wurde mir klar, dass ich mit zwei Soundebenen arbeiten möchte (Hintergrundgeräusche und Musik). Da stand fest, dass die Sache mit dem simplen CD-Player vorbei war. Dann kamen noch die Buttons mit den Waffen- und Gegnersounds dazu. Und da ich das Tablet nun mal hatte, bot sich die weitere Nutzung jenseits des Sounds an.

Dinge, für die ich das Tablet nutze:

-          Initiative nachhalten

Ich habe das Gekritzel schon immer gehasst. Ich habe sieben Spieler in meiner größten Runde, und in Kämpfen zumeist ähnlich viele NPC. Da wird das Aufschreiben der Initiative zum Objekt intensiven Hasses. Apps wie den wunderbar schlichten RPG Initiative Manager gibt es jede Menge, und wer mag, kann da auch noch Boni, Mali und Effekte notieren – andere Apps haben auch noch eine Menge mehr Funktionen.

-          Bilder präsentieren

Bilder von Gegnern und anderen NSC schnell eben googlen und einmal rumzeigen zu können ist bei einem Background wie Mass Effect eine fantastische Sache. Nicht nur gibt es eine Menge Screenshots aus dem Spiel, auch Seiten wie deviantart sind voll mit teils fantastischer Fanart. Das geht natürlich noch besser in der Vorbereitung, aber auch diese Bilder kann man auf dem „Datapad“ schön präsentieren. 

-          Geheime Nachrichten

Das klingt im ersten Moment komisch, aber in einer Runde, in der einige Leute ihre Handies als OmniTools benutzen, ist das nicht völlig unpraktisch. Nicht nur Nachrichten, sondern auch Bild- und Audiodateien lassen sich tatsächlich „überspielen“. Die sollten aber daheim vorbereitet werden.

-          Nachschlagewerk

Meine Regelwerke und die ganzen Tabellen sind als Ausdruck vorhanden, aber allesamt auch als .pdf auf dem Tablet. Manchmal sind die Zettel irgendwo verschollen, manchmal sucht man ein bestimmtes Stichwort… da kann das Tablet deutlich schneller sein.

Ich bin sicher, auf Dauer finden sich auch noch andere Dinge.

I own a Tablet. When I started preparations for my mass effect rpg group I soon realized i wanted to work with two layers of sound (background noise and music). So, that put an end to the thing with the simple CD-player. Then came the buttons with the sounds of enemies and weapons – and since I had the tablet at the table, other uses beyond the sound came to mind.

Things I use the tablet for:

-          Track Initiative

I have always hated the pencil scribbling. There are seven players in my biggest group, and there are almost always as many NPC when there is a fight. I got to hate tracking the initiative with a passion. There are a lot of apps like the wonderfully simple RPG Initiative Manager, and if you like you can track bonuses, handicaps and effects of all kinds. Some other apps have a lot of more functions.

-          Present pictures

Pictures of enemies and other NPC can be googled quickly and shown to the group – and using a background like the mass effect universe is especially rewarding. There are tons of screenshots from the game, and sites like deviantart are filled with fan art, some of it truly fantastic. That needs a bit of research up front, but those pictures can be shown around on the „datapad“ nicely.

-          Secret messages

It sounds funny at first, but in my rpg sessions, some people use their smartphones as OmniTools, so the messaging system is not impractical. Not just messages, but even pictures and audiofiles can be transmitted. That should definitely be prepared at home, though.

-          Dictionary

I have printed out all of my own rulebooks and all of the charts needed, but they’re as .pdf on my tablet. Sometimes the papers get lost, or you look for a specific key word… the tablet can be faster on occasion. 

I’m sure I will find other things to use the tablet for, in time.
